Located in the Central Business District of Newport News on Jefferson Avenue, the new Police Headquarters building is a strong symbol of protection and security and an eye-catching focal point for the community. The design takes every opportunity to make the building and site welcoming to the public, with a boulevard-like side-street approach to the main entrance and heavily landscaped buffer zones on the sides of the property adjacent to neighboring residences. The facades of the building rely on classical architectural elements such as stone (in this case, actually, pre-cast concrete) columns, cornices, and arches to embody formality and stability but contrast them with the warmth of brick facing, a traditional building material on the Peninsula.
